De Shepherd's calling can be traced back to his pastel period and
in particular
to "In the Steps of the Master".

The pastel of the road to Emmaus has the two disciples - Van Gogh and Gauguin (Guy's masters) - turning to face "the stranger" that has joined them. It remained unfinished ; Guy was on the move again. When he resumed painting it was to paint in oils. He subsequently painted two versions but destroyed them both. |
